A Tale of Two Betas – GW2 and TSW

Written by Crikk. Posted in News

Let me start by admitting that I am a huge Guild Wars 2 (GW2) fan with 50/50 in my Hall of Monuments and the Collector’s Edition already pre-purchased.  I’ve played in both pre-purchase Beta Weekend Events and milked as much as I could from the Stress Test time.  I heard about The Secret World (TSW) a while ago, but knowing that I’d be fully committed to GW2, I didn’t bother following it that closely.  However, last weekend I found myself with nothing do and the good folks at www.mmorpg.com where giving away TSW beta keys, so I thought I’d take it for a spin.  Having played and enjoyed both games, I thought it would be an interesting exercise to compare the two.  Without further ado, here are my thoughts on how the two titles stack up against each other.

“Best laid plans” of GW2

Written by Crikk. Posted in News

Market concept artHaving had a chance to play in both Beta Weekend Events and the Stress test, I now have some actual playing time on which to base my observations and comments.  The first thing I want to talk about though, is what a difference actually playing the game makes!

Microtransactions – a little more info

Written by Crikk. Posted in News

MicrotransactionsA little over a month ago I wrote a blog speculating on what microtransactions ArenaNet might include.  Today, on the official blog, ArenaNet posted some more information on their microtransactions without actually giving details on what might be purchased.  So what does their announcement mean?  How are my previous guesses holding up in light of this new information?

Tales of Tyria: Chapter 12 – Fight

Written by Crikk. Posted in Fan Fiction

If you missed it, here’s a link to the previous Chapter.   As Skoldur raced towards the edge of the platform and the precipitous drop into the pit time seemed to slow for him.  One week ago, he had been at home wondering why Bear would not bless him.  Three days ago he had been in Hoelbrak trying to get answers from the Shamans.  One day ago he had found himself trekking through the mountains with a sentient plant.  An hour ago he had been fighting a human who was now a fellow captive.  And just a minute ago he had seen something flitting through the trees that had stirred something inside of him.  Then he had heard the voice in his mind telling him that the deception was complete and now was time to spring the trap if only Skoldur would ackowledge his true self.

Guild Chronicles Ch 1: Washed Ashore

Written by Crikk. Posted in Fan Fiction

Sand. His hand was resting on dry sand. It took a moment for the significance of this to register in Jason’s exhausted mind, but when it did, he dared to crack open an eye and peer at his surroundings. No undead. That was the first thing his mind registered. It gave him a sense of hope that had been missing for the past four days. The rest of the scene started to imprint on his consciousness. He was lying face down on a sandy beach. There were palm and other trees making a thick jungle starting about 50 feet from the shore. The beach was U-shaped, and he was lying at the base of the U. The sun was shining brightly down on him, warming him and telling him it must be almost mid-day.
